Burton Snowboards in conjunction with Milk Gallery, VICE Magazine and powerHouse Books is pleased to present Winter’s Children by photographer and filmmaker Jim Mangan. These snowboarding photographs, first seen on the pages of counter-culture institution VICE are an irreverent commentary on the industry and a playful hybrid of cultural documentary and nature photography. A book based on the series, published by powerHouse Books, will be included in the artist’s book collection at The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

In 2010, Mangan left for Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountain, he was accompanied by seven snowboarders; his college friend, Peter Sutherland, now a reowned photographer and artist, and rising stars from the sport’s next generation, including Laura Hadar and Alex and Andrews.

The sever riders hit the slopes naked on vintage snowboards from the 1980′s, dressed in only vibrant Native American blankets that contrast with the stark winter landscapes.

In the end, for the photographer, the riders, and the viewers, Winter’s Children becomes a baptism, with the cold snow washing away the neon filth of consumerism and serving as a bracing reminder of snowboarding’s pure origins.

Assouline announces the launch of ART GAME BOOK , with a live interactive ART GAME SHOW on Friday, December 3 during Miami’s Art Basel.

To celebrate the launch Assouline, Van Cleef & Arpels, Brooke Geahan and Peter Tunney invite a select group of one hundred key members of the art world to participate in a provocative ART GAME SHOW bringing to life Assouline’s ART GAME BOOK. Contestants will team up and showoff their knowledge of the ins and outs of art history trivia during a cocktail and dinner reception at the Water Salon at Delano on Miami’s South Beach. Peter Tunney, artist, gallerist, and celebrated personality will be the Game Show Host of the evening, quizzing guests with creative questions based on the book. Points will be earned, score will be kept, and the most knowledgeable will be rewarded with prizes from Assouline , Morgan’s Hotel Group, and Van Cleef & Arpels, including the grand prize of a Vintage Alhambra watch.

The book in essence, an approach that allows you not only to test your knowledge of art, but also to see and appreciate it in a new light. Illustrated with more than 300 artworks, this guide presents a thoroughly entertaining, accessible and comprehensive look at art movements from the turn of the century right up to the present day—from painting, sculpture, photography and architecture, to graphic arts, design, video, installation and biotechnology.

In addition to presenting the principal artistic movements, abundant illustrations, numerous games and a glossary, this book includes an appendix with an international guide to museums, websites, fairs and events devoted to modern art the world over. More than 300 artworks illustrate this unique and interactive introduction to modern art history.

Edition One Hundred is pleased to present Delayed Gratification, a two-month exhibition launching November 3, curated by Miss Rosen, and featuring the work of B+, Jianai Jenny Chen, Martha Cooper, Nat Finkelstein, Jim Jocoy, Eric Johnson, Slavery, and Jennifer Uman.

Curator Miss Rosen observes, “Desire is a wondrous thing. When wanting becomes more powerful than needing, an insatiable craving can drive us to a state of madness. This need for immediacy and instant fulfillment is not only accepted but demanded by our society.

“Yet, I have come to discover the power of patience, of the change that takes place when reward is not the goal but a byproduct of success. Instead of striving for the prize, we take it in stride and appreciate it not as our due but with a humble gratitude that on top of everything else, the universe gives us more.” “Delayed Gratification” recognizes that rewards come in all shapes and forms, making it the first Edition One Hundred Holiday Show. The glittering tinsel and twinkling lights of the season remind us to be thankful for all that we have to share with people we adore. Art is an exquisite and thoughtful gift, illustrating a passion that speaks one thousand words in any language. The artists selected for “Delayed Gratification” reveal many paths to one place. From Nat Finkelstein’s Kenny Kenny at Limelight and Jim Jocoy’s Sid Vicious after the Winterland concert to Martha Cooper’s sunbathers on the piers and Jianai Jenny Chen’s Forbidden City, each of these pieces transport us to a place that seems a long time coming.

Janette Beckman’s photography exhibition marks the third artist installment at Project Space. For “Archive of Attitude”, Beckman culls works from her time in London during the punk era through the hip-hop decade in New York and Los Angeles. The show will feature artifacts and photographs of musicians, their fans and youth culture. The exhibition at Project Space runs from August 13th through September 5th.

Beckman is an English documentary photographer who has worked with some of the most influential musicians of the modern era. She began her photography career at the dawn of the punk movement, shooting the top acts of the day: The Clash, The Jam, The Sex Pistols and Boy George, as well as three album covers for The Police. In 1982, Beckman moved to New York City, where she immersed herself in the burgeoning hip-hop scene, photographing pioneers such as Afrika Bambaata, Run DMC, Salt-N-Pepa, Grandmaster Flash and EPMD. Her powerful portraits have been collected in two books: Made in the UK: The Music of Attitude, 1977-1983 and The Breaks: Stylin’ and Profilin’ 1982-1990, both published by PowerHouse Books.

What would New York City look like if it were made out of LEGO pieces? In I LEGO N.Y. author and award-winning illustrator Christoph Niemann takes us on an imaginative journey through the five boroughs, stopping to sight-see and grab a bite to eat along the way. This will be Niemann’s only I LEGO N.Y. event in New York!

Niemann’s inspiration to create a series of miniature New York vignettes came from his sons’ toys during a few cold and dark winter days in Berlin. The ex-pat New Yorker then posted photographs of his creations along with his handwritten captions on his celebrated New York Times blog. Resident and honorary New Yorkers around the world responded enthusiastically to the clever and minimalist inventions, which captured both the iconic (the Empire State Building) and the mundane (man standing on a subway platform) in fewer pieces then one might think possible.

I LEGO N.Y. includes all of the original images, plus 13 new creations. The resulting collection is delightful in its simplicity and moving in its ability to capture the spirit of life in New York in so few strokes.

powerHouse Books is pleased to celebrate the publication of The Brooklyn Navy Yard, the first monograph by photographer John Bartelstone, with an accompanying exhibition of photographic prints at The powerHouse Arena. On Wednesday, March 24, from 7-9PM, our opening reception and book launch party will feature a discussion between Bartelstone and Thomas Roma, Director of Photography at Columbia University. The exhibition runs March 18-April 25, 2010.

About The Brooklyn Navy Yard: New York City’s largest and oldest industrial facility, the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard occupies 250-acres on the East River between the Williamsburg and Manhattan Bridges, and is presently one of New York City’s major industrial sites. One of the last remnants of Brooklyn’s industrial supremacy, the Yard has experienced tremendous change: functioning from the age of wind to that of diesel. As a cradle of naval evolution, the Yard has had to reinvent itself constantly, and this is made evident by the presence of buildings and structures spanning from the 1830s to the 1950s. The Navy Yard was shut down in 1966 and reopened again in 1971 when the City of New York bought it with the intention of redevelopment. Great ships are still repaired there, and the Yard, now an industrial park with a variety of manufacturers and light industries, functions as a refuge from a city that has mostly forgotten that a mixed economy is a key to its survival.

The Brooklyn Navy Yard, the first monograph by John Bartelstone, offers a quiet and striking look at the Yard as a time capsule of industrial New York. The Yard today is a fusion of the sublime and the practical, with eerie abandoned elements existing side by side with vibrant businesses. Bartelstone’s camera is partial to the former. The images show a place out of time, where World War II New York is still palpable. Bartelstone has been photographing the buildings and structures of the Yard since 1994. His photographs are neither a history of the Navy Yard nor a depiction of its role as a modern industrial park; the book instead offers a structured impression of a dreamscape. The book has been printed in a limited run of 1000 collectible copies.

ALIFE PRESENTS and KINZ + TILLOU FINE ART are proud to announce CLAYTON PATTERSON, L.E.S. CAPTURED, a co-produced exhibition that focuses on Patterson’s 30-year documentation of the dramatically transitioned Lower East Side neighborhood of New York City. The exhibition features select photographs; a digital showcase of Patterson’s Front Door portraits; “The Documentarian”, a short from the widely acclaimed recent feature-length documentary, Captured, a film by Ben Solomon, Dan Levin, Jenner Furst.

A documentarian by choice and community activist by circumstance, Patterson’s career spans 30 years of dedicated and compulsive photographic capture of the neighborhood and its community. From documenting the 1988 Tompkins Square Park Police Riot-which earned him both jail-time and Oprah airtime-to photographing individuals posed in front of his gallery door on Essex Street, Patterson is the eyes of the Lower East Side.

His massive body of work is akint to an anthropologic visual catalog of record. The pictures are strikingly honest depictions of Lower East Side kids, families, thugs, lovers, drug dealers and users, disenfranchised artists and others that would otherwise disappear from collective memory. They effectively preserve the rich culture that embodied the neighborhood during a socially and economically depressed period of New York City and as it experiences rapid gentrification. They show an unedited humanity upfront and close-up. Each picture represents a door to a fascinating story, one that he can annotate with a sharp recollection and sensitive perspective.

In his Front Door book Patterson states: “For me, taking the front door photos was magic. It was like touching someone’s soul. We were sharing a moment in time together, in a very intimate and deep way. I always felt a union, a deep connection and respect for my subjects. We were one. We were exploring our inner selves to each other. I was saving a presence, a spirit, the image of a person from the moment, the here and now, for the future. All of us were the Lower East Side.”

powerHouse Books is pleased to launch The Taqwacores: Muslim Punk in the USA by photographer Kim Badawi, and The powerHouse Arena is opening an accompanying exhibition in conjunction with its publication. Our opening reception and book launch party on Thursday, September 17, from 7-9PM, will feature a live performance by Boston-based Punjabi-taqwacore punk band The Kominas.

Just a few years ago the notion of “taqwacore,” a Muslim subgenre of punk rock, existed only as an inspired fiction. Writer Michael Muhammad Knight coined the term for his novel The Taqwacores, the story of a Muslim punk house in Buffalo, NY, which Knight initially distributed from the back of his car in DIY Xerox format. In time, the book found legitimate distribution and garnered supporters, even inspiring the first woman-led prayer of a mixed-gender congregation in the United States in 2005. But something far grander was in the works; unbeknownst to Knight, a real Muslim punk scene was starting to emerge, based on the one he had imagined for the book.

Photographer Kim Badawi first met Knight around this time, and bore witness as the taqwacore phenomenon began to take hold. Beginning in 2006, Badawi traveled across the U.S. with the musicians who had been spurred to action by Knight’s creative vision. In 2007 he was invited to accompany the TaqwaTour, traveling to major cities across North America alongside bands including The Kominas and Secret Trial Five. As the genre continues to take shape and influence a rising generation of artists and intellectuals, Badawi’s The Taqwacores stands as a photographic companion to the original text and an indispensable document of the making of a movement.

The Kominas are a Punjabi-taqwacore punk band from Boston, Massachusetts.

“I had the immense opportunity to see this wonderful paper craft art installation by a genius of the name of Wataru Itou, a young student of a major art university here in Tokyo. The installation is hand made over four years of hard work, complete with electrical lights and a moving train, all made of paper! Clearly, this man must have created one of the most stunning examples of Paper Craft in the world? At the exhibition you will also have the chance to see a video showing Mr. Itou at work in his studio, cutting and folding piece by piece. The exhibition is called Umi no Ue no Oshiro (A Castle On the Ocean ), 海の上のお城. It is exhibited at Uminohotaru, a place which in itself is a major attraction: a service area in the middle of the ocean, right between Tokyo City and Chiba Prefecture. If you haven’t checked it out yet, use Google Earth for a close up of what is probably the weirdest parking lot in the world. Well, it’s more than a parking lot actually, but I am saving a more detailed description along with photos for another post. For now, enjoy this wonderful work of art!”
