Designer Sergey Makhno describes it as a sort of deconstructed style – all the odd angles, slants and lines in the space, from the furniture to the walls, do help give it that deconstructed feel. But they make for such a dynamic, visually stimulating interior. The tree-like structure over the fireplace is striking, the bathroom has this sort of fun house feel to it. The lighting scheme is interesting with all those hanging clusters of Crosslight fixtures (common throughout the space) and funky chandelier wall fixtures in the bathroom.

The Apartment is a creative agency that specializes in design for all facets of life, from branding, marketing, architecture, interior, product and graphic design. Looking at this interior transformation, you can see that the ideas put in motion come from somewhere deep, somewhere where the grand scheme is equally important as the details. It is therefore no surprise that a multi-disciplinary creative agency was behind this conversion. It’s nice to see the conservation of some of the original elements, like the brick wall, in contrast with brand new modern components, like that fireplace. There’s this modern, mid-century, vintage, industrial, oriental, classical mix going on, that you would think hard to pull off without looking confusing but the feeling in this loft is still very unified. The Apartment was able to capture the harmony and let it colorfully shine throughout.

Manfred Kielnhofer plays with fluorescent light and transparent tubes that change color creating an illuminate decor. The chair is a composition of unique long neon lighting contained in transparent tubes placed horizontally; a surprise of what one can do with commercially available fluorescent light fixtures.
A series of ‘how to’ videos have been released by Ikea Malaysia to show users how to make use of every inch of their small living space. The Ikea team demonstrates that small spaces can be beautiful and can still be packed with useful functions and facilities. The rooms they look at are a 40-square-meter (430 sq. ft.) share apartment; an 11-square-meter (118 sq. ft) bedroom and living room for a couple and a tiny 2.7-square-meter (29 sq. ft.) bathroom.

Although these videos promote products from Ikea, the tips given don’t necessarily limit to only Ikea products. Some useful information include to purchase objects that have double-functions; use items that are only useful and utlize space upwards, such as installing shelves and cabinets.

Maison Martin Margiela will kick off couture week with a July 4 presentation at La Maison Champs Elysées, the Paris hotel that has just received a makeover by the fashion house. Designed in 1864 by architect Jules Pellechet for the Duchess of Rivoli, Princess D’Essling (grand mistress of fashion maven Empress Eugenie‘s household), the Haussmannian house was completed in 1866.

Nearly 150 years (and a few owners and a modern addition) later, Maison Martin Margiela won a competition to redesign the historical part of the 57-room hotel. Team Margiela worked with landscape painters and lighting engineers to deploy materials ranging from wool and paper to Ductal concrete and “gypsum from the Urals” in a new restaurant, smoking room, bar, and reception area, along with 17 jaw-dropping hotel suites. One is papered in black-and-white photographs of the sumptuous salon below, while another drapes everything in Margiela’s signature white cotton covers. Museum fanatics can book the “Closet of Rarities” suite, where the coal black walls and black-stained oak parquet floors are offset by a cabinet of curiosities. “Maison Martin Margiela has created a dramatic world where reality and make-believe seem to blend,” noted the house in a statement. “The decor is like a succession of stage sets where references are mixed so as to create an unusual atmosphere where past and present jostle harmoniously.”

Wallpaper has undergone a revolution of late, but Studio Printworks may just be the epicenter. Founded by Temo Callaghan, a veteran of Clarence House and Dennis Shah, a legendary hand-screen printer, they began making waves in 2004.

The two set out to create their own collection of wallpaper, but not just another collection. They wanted something fresh, bold, smart and unique. A collection that was clearly different from the more staid designs that were then the norm.

Their first group of 10 designs were unlike anything else on the market. In 2005, a major article in House & Garden got them underway and Studio Printworks has been stylishly evolving ever since.

Their designs include a range of papers from twisted toiles and updated classics to patterns that look innocent at first and then reveal a deeper meaning. Some are purely decorative, others are more surprising.

Pineapple plays with scale. Memento Mori plays with perception. Each pattern has a story and a style that makes them stand apart.

“Bead” by Given Campbell is simple and bold with unexpected color combos.

Sgt. Pepper Paisley is a hip(pie) take on a classic, each named after a Beatles tune.

While the rest of the fashion industry is staying to the left with runways show, Jean Paul Gaultier has decided to steer right and leave the runway alone and focus his talents into modern home designs. Gaultier translates his distinctive, daring brand of fashion into furniture form with the help of high-end French furniture maker, Roche Bobois who celebrates their 50th anniversary this year. The curious, contemporary collection of furniture and textiles features the same vibrant colors and patterns, used in exciting and unexpected ways. We love how the designer’s playful but chic aesthetic comes through in mix-and-match upholstery and throw cushions, sensual sculptural tables, and as with his fashion collections, the difference really is in the details.

Soap dishes take the form of an outstretched hand and toilet-paper holders are modeled after a hand gripping a stick, while hooks and pulls become branches with a modern, whimsical appeal.
