Most chairs in homes tend to be angled or placed in a corner to give the room some character. Now where the hell do you place this in your home? Who knows! but I do know that you definitely need to have one in your home this year.
This lovely piece of design eye candy comes from Spanish artist Maximo Riera who designed this limited edition piece that is part of a larger collection called ‘Animal Chairs’. The series consists of more than fifteen different works where the marriage between furniture and animal is the main component. The series looks to bring life to the basic function of the object, making it more present while creating a stronger connection between the spectator, the chair and its environment. French-born and Tokyo-based designer Emmanuelle Moureaux has created the ‘Shibafu Table’. 56 slender colored acrylic sticks are randomly arranged into a piece of transparent acrylic, creating an aesthetic, reminiscent of a colorful Shibafu or lawn. The sticks support the transparent acrylic panel, while refracting and reflecting light as if they were soaking under water. The colored sticks appear and disappear, and even seem to bend at times depending on the angle at which you view them. Continue reading “Emmanuelle Moureaux: Acrylic Furniture” »

Gering & Lopez Gallery welcome the works of Todd James aka REAS as it opens its doors to the first exhibition of the new year. Titled “Make My Burden Lighter”, the show highlights new works from James, with an opening taking place on January 15th (6-8pm), running through February 20th, 2009. Further information regarding the exhibition can be found below.
“In Make My Burden Lighter, James depicts the sinful truths of American life with winsome cartoonish charm. Anthropomorphized weapons cajole in blood baths with pink-skinned blonde bombshells. Sprawling battle scenes extend ad infinitum across multiple sheets of paper. Complex, all-consuming compositions have an overwhelming sense of momentum, as if they were inevitable and unstoppable. These celebratory scenes of massive global chaos are sharply ironic yet playfully whimsical, obscuring our collective moral sense of the sanctity of life and death while pushing the boundaries of the viewer’s ability to judge what is desirable or taboo.
These seemingly innocent stream-of-consciousness doodles may appear as overtly political protest pieces upon closer examination. However, James does not seek to be didactic with his work. He is more interested in visually exploring the rhetorical techniques utilized by the American government and media in their attempts at desensitizing the populace’s perception of current affairs. The American tradition of packaging, commodifying, and manipulating information is at play in these works. They thus deeply connect with the current state of our shared reality, critiquing how we as spectators are led to understand it.”

INSA and ROUSSEAU introduce their lounge chair to the follow-up on their bubble chair of last year. Rousseau created a set of loungers inspired by automotive engineering and science fiction, shown in three different finishes. One chrome painted, one in two tone custom leather upholstery. The chair’s design and aesthetics are vintage INSA with the colorful and striking pink color that has marked so many different platforms in the past. The Apartment, the NYC based creative agency lead by Stefan Boublil unleashed photos of an amazing project (apartment) they’ve recently completed in Manhattan.
We reached out to Stefan & he gave us enormous insight into his design process; starting with collecting solid data about the clients living habits & daily routines to the minute (if possible), from wake to sleep in order to design a floorplan which combined 3 smaller apartments into this masterpiece with a deep focus on accentuating the amazing view from the space into Central Park et al.
In addition, his client hoped for a “warm” feeling, leading Stefan to redefine warm as we know it – instead of using color to convey warmth, he created a warm living space; through the use of texture, lighting & design with an undying loyalty to the buildings surroundings as his muse.

In order to achieve the end result, Stefan started by combining 3 smaller apartments into one, making sure every single room was constructed so that the “postcard view” of Central Park is the star. Add a built-in wraparound sofa, a secret door in the solid walnut library and distribute surround sound all over the home, this project is an ode to the 80s during which the building was erected.
Here are the rest of the photos: Continue reading “The apartment by The Apartment” »

Zurich-based Schindlersalmeron created the minimal hocker stool using three sheets of aluminum folded together. The three pieces of aluminum are identical in shape and use spatial folding to stabilize each other. Using aluminum allows the stools to stay light, only 1.6 kg, while the splayed design makes them stackable. While definitely contemporary in style, the stool’s pointed arch is reminiscent of classic gothic architecture. This design feature is highlight when all three colours, white, silver and black, are stacked on top of each other. Schindlersalmeron is composed of German designer Christoph Schindler and Margarita Salmeron Espinosa of Spain. Continue reading “Schindlersalmeron Aluminum Hocker Stool” »

Mike To, of Hong Kong-based Objects Design Group, recently released The Moon Chair. While “moon chair” has come to describe many spherical seating designs, To’s design sets itself apart. It exudes an air of solidity, and appears to be carved from a solid block of stone. Finishes options include high gloss gray or bronze. Continue reading “Moon Chair by Mike To” »
