Helsinki Design Week 2010

August 25 – September 5

The stylish city of Helsinki, Finland is about to showcase its design acumen during their sixth annual Design Week. With 11 days of events, this year’s theme is storytelling. Along with open studios, design markets, workshops, fashion shows and art installations in shop windows, there’s an event called Pecha Kucha Night. Named after the sound of chatter in Japanese, Pecha Kucha Night gives a group of specially selected speakers a mere 20 seconds to narrate 20 images of their design work. (more…)

The Archive Series by David Garcia Studio

The Archive Series by David Garcia Studio, Denmark is a collection of pieces that investigate space and books and the traditional relationships that humans have to books.

Archive I is a weight balance library, the readers chair is elevated in proportion to the amount of books in the shelves.

Archive II is a circular library for the nomad book collector, allowing the user to step inside, and walk away with half a ton of books.

Archive III is a censored book stand, the books close suddenly if anyone approaches the reading stand.

Archive IV challenges space and weight, by hanging from the ceiling. a wooden cylinder, 3 meter in diameter and 3.5 meter high, suspended from above, serves as a sitting area and as an archive for books and music in its inside. the visitor encounters a quiet space for conversation, and in the center a rope ladder takes the curious to a level above, a micro lounge room, where one can look out into the crowd. From the outside, the introvert character of the structure hides the human body, only revealing feet at floor level, and the heads of visitors that climb to the top. More information here. (more…)

The Page | E-Reader

The Page is a prototype E-reader concept by designer Jae Kim that uses a semi-transparent e-ink screen to display image and text. The project aims to find a more appropriate way to interact with newspapers in a digital context. The concept marries the affordability of print and online newspapers into a new device. For starters the E-reader folds into segments much like newsprint, allowing it to be spread out on a table, or folded up neatly on the train. This differs from other E-readers, which invent a new format that strays from the original. Beyond the product design Kim also designed a flexible grid system that allows users to see content in a broad way like in the newspaper, while also being able to directly interact and alter content like on the web.

MTV: The New Logo and its Meaning

rebrand-of-an-icon-525x310

After using the original logo for 29 years MTV has slightly change its logo by cropping the original one. According to an MTV Press Release from last week: “The logo is part of MTV’s re-invention to connect with today’s millennial generation and bring them in as part of the channel.”

MTV has updated its iconic logo. Largely forgoing the network’s music heritage, the new three-dimensional design instead showcases MTV’s reality-TV talent, such as the casts of “Jersey Shore,” “The Buried Life” and “Teen Mom.”

Heading into fourth-quarter 2009, MTV was in the midst of a multi-year ratings and revenue decline, with third-quarter ratings alone down about 5% from the year prior, enough to rank the network No. 24 in total viewers during prime-time and 26 during total day. The network hadn’t had an up year in ratings since 2005, the last year groundbreaking shows such as “The Osbournes” and “Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica” were on the air.

Then “Jersey Shore” happened. (more…)

FUCT “The Doctrine” PT. 1

Founder Erik Brunetti of FUCT has taken the cinematic world and meshed it in a whole series of short films. Always having a vivid and strong approach to his graphical work, we’re excited to see the remaining parts of the series. Part 1’s “The Doctrine” will be presented on FUCT.com.

“For 2010 I will begin presenting a trilogy of FUCT commercials, the next logical step, given the fact that I reference much from cinema pop culture. I feel this is a major push in the right direction for my brand within our industry, as we have the ability to do anything with the digital tools available to us.

My decision to take our home page one step farther, (i.e. actually making my own films, as opposed to showing films I reference) came via the Internet / hypesites, after reading about lesser, younger companies, as well as over paid art directors complaining about how ” it’s all been done, where can we go from here, streetwear is dead…etc.” I find those statements and sentiments defeatist. The sky is the limit as to what can be achieved.”

The Eurobike IF Gold Award winner, the Dahon los XL is an urban folding bike which the jury described as the “perfect example of a stylish, functionally designed folding bike that meets the demands of urban mobility and flexibility.” Not only is the los XL have the geometry, riding position and handling characteristics of a full-sized bicycle, but it also comes equipped with an integrated phone/GPS charger, integrated air pump and Valo lighting. The perfect fit for urban riders who want a full-size bike but also need the convenience of a compact fold.

“The Ios is a complete rethink about the needs of urban cyclists,” states Joakim Uimonen, Dahon Product Design Manager. “We threw out the constraints of standard bicycle frames and components, completely re-designing them where necessary. We came up with some radically new innovations that we feel are very important for the urban bike category.”
