As a fan of coastal areas, I thought I’d seen it all. But until a few weeks ago, I’d never seen a dune lake. In fact, I’d never even heard of one, so when I read that the area around Rosemary Beach where I’d planned a long weekend was rife with these rarities, I was excited to check them out. Found only in Australia, New Zealand, Madagascar, Oregon and the Gulf Coast of Northwest Florida, dune lakes are fed by streams, rain and ground water, creating large bodies of calm water right behind ocean dunes.
30A is the main drag through the new urbanist towns of Seaside, Watercolor and Rosemary Beach and Watercolor and dune lakes punctuate the drive. Separated from the gulf beaches by sand dunes ranging from a few feet to 30, they offer yet another way to enjoy the water. Continue reading “YOLOing on Northwest Florida’s Dune Lakes” »
Chrome Canyon (aka Morgan Z, Apes & Androids former keyboardist) is announcing the release of his debut LP, Elemental Themes out this summer. In the meantime he has offered the first single “Branches”.
Following Apes & Android’s 2009 breakup, Morgan Z began his own recording studio in Brooklyn, where he started collecting vintage synthesizers. Honing his solo project in the studio, he collaborated with Phoebe Oglesbee, and Tyler Thacker from Greatest Hits who drums on the album. Chrome Canyon’s sound is heavily layered with analog synths weaving in a psychedelic pastiche of Kraftwerk, Vangelis, Giorgio Moroder and Pink Floyd and one can expect to hear it in an epic soundtrack fashion on Elemental Themes. In honor of Kate Bush’s “Director’s Cut” release, Chrome Canyon and vocalist Phoebe Oglesbee have teamed up to cover “Suspended in Gaffa.” They will also be working together on an EP this summer with more details to come.

The film examines the profound claim that many of our most-debilitating degenerative diseases – such as heart disease, type-2 diabetes, and several forms of cancer – are almost always preventable, and in many cases reversible, through diet alone. The major storyline traces the journeys of Dr. T. Colin Campbell, a nutritional biochemist from Cornell University, and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, a former top surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic. The idea of food as medicine is put to the test. Throughout the film, cameras follow “reality patients” who have chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes. Doctors teach these patients how to adopt a whole foods plant-based diet as the primary approach to treat their ailments – while the challenges and triumphs of their journeys are revealed.
Installation 7 continues with the popular all-video format that was introduced for Installation 6. The annual tour is designed to present established and emerging artists and their work to audiences across the country. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about the summer films that are on fewer people’s radars — the ones that won’t be #1 at the box office — yet, they’re primed to absorb some serious critical acclaim.
Last year, Limité launched its Top 10 Indie Summer Flicks as an alternate to all of the standard summer blockbusters. Many of those films went on to receive sparkling reviews and accolades, as well as Oscar nominations in several categories (including Best Picture, Best Documentary, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay, among others), so we kinda feel like we know what we’re talking about here.
We’re proud to present the second-annual summer film guide. Share your thoughts below by leaving a comment.
1. BEAUTIFUL BOY
by Daniel Quitério
Michael Sheen and Maria Bello play Bill and Kate, a married couple that learns its son committed a mass shooting at his university before taking his own life. The two struggle through the grief and confusion as the media spill into their lives. Beautiful Boy is the winner of the 2010 Toronto Film Festival International Critics’ Award.
This chilling film is reminiscent of last year’s Rabbit Hole with threads of 2005’s American Gun interwoven. Both Beautiful Boy and Rabbit Hole explore a couple’s relationship as it struggles over the death of a son. In Beautiful Boy, however, the stakes are higher, as that son is also responsible for taking the lives of several others, which is a subplot in the heavy-handed message film American Gun.
This film’s got “Oscar performances” written all over it for both Sheen and Bello, two highly underrated actors who have been aching for and deserving of that spotlight.

Fela Kuti was defamed, jailed, and beaten for his refusal to stand down in the face of corrupt and oppressive regimes. He started his own political party, The Movement Of The People, and wrote a corresponding track – a call to action – called “M.O.P. (Movement Of The People) Political Statement Number 1.” If Fela were alive today, he would be proud to watch the people of Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Cote D’Ivoire, and Sudan, among others, who are fighting for their political and personal freedoms. Like him, they are ready to pay a heavy price for their transformative subordination.
Join these Fela “Movement Of The People” (M.O.P.) parties and celebrate the people of the world fighting for their rights. Stand with the people across Africa and the Middle East during this revolutionary Spring and get inspired by Fela’s music!

Possibly the biggest Hip Hop artist coming out of Canada drops a track, “Dreams Money Can Buy” on his October’s Very Own blog this morning. The song samples Jail Paul’s recent BNT “BTSTU”. In his post, Drake notes that the song isn’t an official single, rather it’s “just a piece of my story. Hear me out though…”
