NYC Park: Bomb Shelter and Terror Attack Simulation

On Monday March 28th, in Washington Square Park from 1pm until 4pm, THE BOMB SHELTER, an immersive multi-media installation exhibit will be open to the public. A periodic siren will sound and participating park goers will have 15 seconds to get from where they are in Washington Square to the shelter – the same length of time that those facing rocket attacks in Israel have to reach safety.

“The artists wanted New Yorkers to viscerally feel what Israelis went through this week during the bombing of a Jerusalem bus stop and repeated rocket strikes,” says Craig Dershowitz, President of Artists 4 Israel, the non-profit that created the installation. ESPA at the Istanbul Edition by HBA

One of the leading hospitality design firms Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA), just launched ESPA spa in the new Istanbul EDITION hotel. Taking inspiration from the local Turkish traditions and customs comes to the life this state-of-the-art spa.

The space was shaped to evoke the mysterious and sensuous atmosphere and mood of the storied Turkish city. The traditional hammam, a focal point to any genuine Turkish Spa, and its faceted cut out patterns was the main design inspiration, lending a subtle yet atmospheric feeling to the overall space. Spread over three floors, the spa’s unique combination of design elements such as dark and sumptuous lighting, chocolate brown marble, embossed bronze floors and walls of crystals helps to create the perfect space to lose oneself and forget the stresses of the outside world.

Treatment rooms are programmed to have different light levels throughout the varying stages of the treatment: with a welcoming level for arrival, a very low level for treatment, a another level for showering, and a level for relaxation. The Spa has both passive and active spaces, and the light levels reflect each space with the fitness room being the brightest.

The Many Faces of Pedro Romero

Cartagena is full of surprises. While on a recent visit to the Colombian coastal city, I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a collection of prolific street drawings tucked away on a clandestine street in the city’s Getsemani neighborhood. These drawings, I later learned, were different depictions of Pedro Romero—a revolutionary war hero during the early 18th-century uprising against Spain. Romero’s true depiction is unknown, so in memoriam, various artists gathered on this street to pay an aesthetic tribute to the late martyr.

Country Cottage On The Isle of Skye

Compact but sweet, this small country cottage on the Isle of Skye boasts beauty in its simplicity. Created by architecture firm Rural Design, this 75m2 wood country home has lots of character in its wood-clad exterior and minimalist interior. A corrugated roof lends the cottage an industrial character that complements the farm surroundings. Not only is the cottage small, the budget to build was also, at just £115,000. Inside, a polished-concrete floor, and exposed wood walls and ceilings continue the industrial aesthetic. A large window in the living room frames the breathtaking view. Branching off the main living area, the bedrooms enjoy their privacy. The Black Shed house is set in a location as it’s positioned right at the foot of Macleods Table (Isle of Skye, Scotland). It is now available for holidays – you can rent it here.

Levi’s Honors World Water Day in NYC

Levi’s Brand commemorated World Water Day today with their Levi’s Water<Less jeans collection, an assortment of denim made by using less water during the finishing process, has already helped save millions of liters of water since they first hit shelves this January.

To further draw attention to this important matter, yesterday, Levi’s and Water.org staged a World Water Day ‘Water March’ comprised of more than 100 ‘water carriers’ who embarked on a 3 mile journey through the winding, busy streets of New York City. Symbolic of the distance millions of people in developing nations walk on a daily basis to access clean water, the march took participants from South Street Sea Port through numerous Manhattan neighborhoods, ending in Union Square. Along the way, each participant hauled 5-gallon ‘water’ containers above their heads.

“Take One”, A Documentary on Swedish House Mafia

“Take One,” a documentary on Swedish House Mafia, the DJ collective of Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell exclusively on iTunes. The 45 minute documentary is directed by Christian Larson, who has collaborated with video director Jonas Åkerlund.

The film goes beyond the music to show what binds together 3 friends, 3 artists, 3 pioneers, 3 total individuals in an emotional ride to success as a group. In recent years, the media have portrayed DJs as the new rock stars and where the 80’s gave birth to acid house, this film illustrates how a whole new generation are again pioneering electronic music to define youth culture for millions. Taste the extremes, the excess, the highs and the lows as this film, in one emotional hurricane, makes you want to simultaneously dance, cry, laugh, rave and work harder for your own goals.

Larson, quickly carved himself a unique and reputable niche in the film industry with his rhythmic visual style. In 2008 he met Swedish House Mafia who noticed his style which blended his talent as a drummer with the edgy and fast cuts of his films. From here, they started to launch youtube clips and mini films onto the internet directed by Larson. These quickly became some of the most watched clips in the electronic genre and the partnership grew seeing Larson make the documentary film about the band and their first music video which saw over 6 million youtube-hits in 4 weeks.

Photos of Frank Gehry NYC Birthday Fete

Berta Gehry, U2 front man Bono, Frank Gehry, Ali Hewson.

Over this past weekend on Saturday March 19th, guest gathered to celebrate the 82nd birthday of legendary architect, cognoscenti of the architecture, design, and real estate worlds gathered included Bono and wife Ali Hewson, Candice Bergen, Mike Nichols, Ben Gazzara; art world stars Chuck Close, Claes Oldenburg, Cai Guo-Qiang, Thomas Krens, Lisa Dennison, Larry Gagosian; architects Robert A.M. Stern and David Childs, Marilyn Taylor; as well as real estate and business leaders Marshall Rose, Peter Lewis, Mary Ann Tighe and Kathy Wylde.

In addition to Gehry’s birthday, it was also the formal opening of the gleaming Lower Manhattan tower. Architecture critics are calling the building the finest skyscraper in New York in a half-century and one of the most beautiful towers downtown. The celebration’s host Bruce Ratner, Chairman and CEO of Forest City Ratner Companies presented Frank Gehry with a 40-inch silver birthday cake shaped like a Gehry-esque tower as guests sang “Happy Birthday” to the 82-year old architect.

Rising to 870 feet, Frank Gehry’s first skyscraper, the 76-story New York by Gehry, with its stainless steel cladding shaped to look like draped fabric, is now the tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere, and an inspired addition to the Lower Manhattan skyline.
