One of Israel’s most iconic images is being turned into desperately needed help for the homeless of New York City. For generations, Jews have traveled to Jerusalem to pray at the Western Wall. Now a group of young Jews recently returned from a free ten day trip to Israel sponsored by Birthright Israel are using the inspiration of that experience to tackle a problem closer to home – helping to ensure that homeless New Yorkers have the blankets needed to endure one of the City’s coldest winters in years. First introduced in 1937 by the B.F. Goodrich Company, PF Flyers uses Posture Foundation insole technology, which is the basis for the brand name. PF Flyers footwear ranges from high and lo-top sporty shoes to oxfords and slip-ons for ‘work, relaxation, and play.’ Sport styles by PF were icons of the 1950’s, renowned for helping you ‘play at full speed longer.’ The brand earned a permanent place in American mythology, lionized in stories and films such as “The Sandlot.” In the first collaboration between a sneaker company and a pro player, PF and Bob Cousy, basketball’s first superstar, created a string of classic court designs. Cousy catapulted to sport legend wearing PF Flyers. By the 1960’s, PF Flyers was one of the most popular sneaker brands in America, women would buy apparel made to match their PF’s and they were also the standard issue in the US Army.
Frankie and Alice is a touching film based on the true story of a woman with multiple personality disorder. Frankie Murdoch (Halle Berry) is a stripper in 1970s Los Angeles. She is beautiful, street smart, and known to be a little crazy. On multiple occasions, she has blacked out and ended up in jail or the hospital with bumps and bruises she cannot explain. After running out half naked into an open roadway, she is taken to the hospital and is reluctantly treated by Dr. Oz (Stellan Skarsgård, Mamma Mia!), a medical professor who left clinical work long ago, but just happens to be the only doctor on duty. Oz is immediately intrigued by her case and takes the time to understand her needs when the other doctors don’t want to spend the time and resources. Together, Oz and Frankie unlock her personalities and the past events that could have created them. Continue reading “Film Review: Frankie & Alice” »
Ironic that I’m currently in Israel and now giving you some tunes from Jewish-Canadian-Rockstars Chromeo, the music off their album Business Casual definitely fits and feels like the vibe that I’ve been getting while in Tel Aviv. “Hot Mess” being one of their popular songs gets blessed with a remix from your favorite duo’s favorite new duo Duck Sauce and if you haven’t been paying attention to any sort of good music, the duo is comprised of A-Trak and Arman Van Helden. Adding a hook sung by La Roux’s Elly Jackson must have been a no brainer—her vocals are infectious pop mastery and suit up quite nice with Chromeo’s current style. Nothing messy about this.
