Four Tet / Gold Panda Concert Review. October 22 2010

Four Tet

This past weekend I got a chance to attend what I expected to be one of the best concerts of 2010: Four Tet & Gold Panda at Webster Hall.

Gold Panda’s sound is a mix between hip-hop and house. The prolific UK-based producer captures the progeny of 70’s disco funk meets hip-hop with songs filled with interesting melodies which seem to have been sampled from traditional Asian and Middle Eastern music. Panda’s constant onstage movement is almost as engaging as his delivery of songs–often presenting stripped-down versions of tunes and letting them simmer and eventual boil to a bubbling pot of bass-thumping dance extravaganza. All in all, Panda’s 40-minute set left me overly satisfied yet still wanting more. Continue reading “Four Tet / Gold Panda Concert Review. October 22 2010” »

If you’re traveling to one of the many hotels or resorts near Playa del Carmen, you don’t have to take a vacation from fitness.

Tiffany Rothe’s Center 8 Studio has a full schedule of challenging classes in a setting that’s totally unique. While vacationers are warmly welcomed, Center 8 is a community fitness center where expats and locals come to bask in Tiffany’s talent and glow. 25hours Hotel Frankfurt Tailored by Levi’s

Housed in a former office building revamped by architect Karl Dudler,  designers Delphine Buhro and Michael Dreher have spiced things up, imbuing Dudler’s pared-down minimalism with inspiration from the hotel’s fashionable next-door neighbor, the new German headquarters of Levi Strauss. In a nod to the close working relationship between the hotel and clothing label, Buhro and Dreher incorporated elements of American popular culture into their design, which, like a good pair of worn-in blue jeans, is timeless and comfortable. Ky-Mani Marley’s letter to his Dad, Bob Marley

One of the most prolific musicians, Bob Marley died when Ky-Mani was just 5, but nearly 30 years later, Marley still looms large in his life, as seen in Ky-Mani’s new memoir, “Dear Dad”.

“I told my story from my heart and soul. After writing the book and reading over the first edit, I didn’t realize some of the stuff I had bottled up inside of me. So this book, for me, became therapy,” Ky-Mani said. “If I was to follow in my father’s footsteps, then what would they say? ‘Oh, he’s trying to be like his dad.’ Then if I take a different path, they say, ‘He’s supposed to be like his father.’ So you can’t please everybody. I just have to be true to myself and true to my art and do what comes naturally to me.” Continue reading “Ky-Mani Marley’s letter to his Dad, Bob Marley” »

RABBIT HOLE is a vivid, hopeful, honest and unexpectedly witty portrait of a family searching for what remains possible in the most impossible of all situations.

Just eight months ago, they were a happy suburban family with everything they wanted.  Now, they are caught in a maze of memory, longing, guilt, recrimination, sarcasm and tightly controlled rage from which they cannot escape.   While Becca finds pain in the familiar, Howie finds comfort.
