In 2008, Dior collaborated with Chinese photographer Quentin Shih to produce “Stranger in the Glass Box”. This summer, for the re-opening of the Dior boutique in Shanghai, Shih was asked to lending a helping hand once more to produce a series of images, using the last couture collection, that would be displayed in the boutiques windows.
Shih plays with surreal beauty and creates oil painting-style compositions by retouching his subjects and in this case using one Chinese stereotype and repeating it in a pattern to reinforce the rigor and uniformity of Chinese mass culture.
If you have your ears close to the streets and know what’s going on in the world of Hip Hop, you might be familiar with the buzz that’s growing with this young fella repping Mississippi. As a fan of the smooth, Woodgrain Cadillac Pimpin’ sound, Big K.R.I.T. fits the bill.
This mixtape is an “un-official” best of Big K.R.I.T. mixtape put together by the good people at Rap Mullet and Trapper John MD. Congrats to K.R.I.T. on receiving a deal at Def Jam most recently and landing some pretty large features on various singles. For those aware and unaware of his music, this is a good mixtape to set you on your way.

European denim brand Edwin releases this spring / summer 2011 lookbook, a peek into its plans for the new year. The ‘models’, Edwin guys’ friends and family, were photographed wearing the next spring collection in their natural habitat, allowing for a relaxed and casual lifestyle to come through. The photographs were not retouched, leaving the imperfections of life and dust present – a clear reference to the philosophy behind the brand’s core product – denim. The collection features extensive workwear influences with shirts, jeans, overalls, and other pieces that give off a functional yet stylish vibe.
Every so often Hip Hop delivers a video that you have to stop whatever you’re doing just to take in the message and visuals and that’s exactly what the Rik Cordero video for The Roots “The Fire” does.
“The Fire” chronicles a post-apocalyptic death march set in 1945 during the final stages of World War II in Europe. After a cataclysmic event renders the war futile, a paramilitary splinter group — led by a Kurtz-like figure known as The Commodore — forces the transfer of young men who will be used as labor… and food. The last survivor of the march receives a mysterious White Box which holds the key to survival. – Rik
The Wall Street Journal did a very interesting article on the relationship between language and culture, and how we think. This is something I often thinking about when traveling. Often you find that foreigners can speak their native language and English, while in American most American ONLY speak English. Does that make us inconsiderate to other cultures? Of course not, it’s a matter of education and the desire to learn.
As one of the largest cities on earth, you can’t walk one block without walking into someone with a dog (no matter what size). Luckily NYC is sorta good at curbing their dogs… but there’s always that lazy person or the eco-freak who thinks they’re doing good by leaving dog turd on the street. No! my friend, dog shit on my sneakers has never nor will ever be “cool”. Designer Jungeschachtel created “Dog Poo” bags which comes in 16 recyclable options with humorous or ironic quotes. And yes, these are biodegradable, how could they not be? Available at Designspray.com for 12,90 € for 16 bags.
A few weeks ago I was invited to see the Moët Hennessy Holiday 2010 Preview and one of the many additions to stand out was the tribute collection to Andy Warhol by Dom Pérignon.
A fan of the champagne himself, Warhol along with 20 friends purchased 2,000 bottles to be stored and enjoyed on the arrival of the new millennium. Unfortunately Warhol didn’t live to see that day and the location as to where these bottles are remains unknown. Continue reading “A Tribute to Andy Warhol by Dom Pérignon” »

As everyone is slowly getting ready to put away those summer garments to prepare for Fall fashion, Griffin presents their Fall/Winter 2010 lookbook. Styled by Harris Elliot, with photography from Donald Christie. Inspired by American Military uniforms of the 50s and 60s military-inspired designs with collaborative efforts with American fabric brand, Woolrich. The collection reflects an aesthetic of military meets technology, created to offer somewhat of an anti-fashion. This upcoming seasons palette features earth tone with creative cuts and forms throughout its extensive garment range.
