If there’s one entertainment device that people know and love, it’s the television. In fact, 4 billion people across the world watch TV and the average American spends five hours per day in front of one*. Recently, however, an increasing amount of our entertainment experience is coming from our phones and computers. One reason is that these devices have something that the TV lacks: the web. With the web, finding and accessing interesting content is fast and often as easy as a search. But the web still lacks many of the great features and the high-quality viewing experience that the TV offers. Continue reading “Introducing Google TV” »
How does one review a Bollywood film when Bollywood films are inherently, well … bad? Of course, the glitz and colors and sounds of Indian cinema attract millions of loyal followers worldwide. The genre exemplifies a celebration of life, and who can argue with a film that makes you feel good? However, one might question the merit of the traditional Bollywood fare when the celebration of life comes at the expense of good writing, good acting, and good everything else. Recent films like Slumdog Millionaire have recently introduced the Bollywood genre to the Western public, but for those who aren’t as familiar with what India’s film scene is all about, rest assured that Slumdog is not a Bollywood film. What is, however, is Kites, the new feature produced by Bollywood veteran Rakesh Roshan and directed by Anurag Basu. Continue reading “Film Review: Kites” »

If cooking is an art form, then food is the most common medium of artistic expression in the world. Opening May 22, Scion’s Installation L.A. Gallery presents “Palate,” a group exhibition of internationally lauded artists in which food takes its rightful place inside the gallery. Curated by Zio Fulcher, “Palate” features new works and installations by Clare Crespo, Jeph Gurecka, Scott Hove, Tamara Kostianovsky, Alan Macdonald, James Reynolds, Martha Rich and Jeff Vespa at Scion’s 4,500-square foot Installation Space in Culver City.
“Palate,” which means the sense of taste, but also references an artist’s palette, will showcase a wide array of food-related art from Martha Rich’s feminine, cake-laden illustrations to Alan Macdonald’s classically rendered paintings of pilgrims that feature the unlikely additions of grocery bags, baked beans and chips. “Palate” will also include James Reynolds’ series of photographs documenting Death Row inmates’ last meal requests, as well as Jeff Vespa’s giant Polaroids of fast food burgers.
