Review: ‘Please Give’

Walking contradictions are not unique. People are often conflicted — saying one thing and doing another. Do as I say, not as I do. Even Polonius offered Laertes his fatherly wisdom when he advised, “To thine own self be true.” It’s often these internal conflicts that add a certain depth to a person’s character. The intermingling of right and wrong shape the human conscience and often inform the drama that colors life. This is the stuff that makes one’s personal world cinematic, the stuff that adds humanity and relatability to a movie character. Case in point: the character Kate in Please Give.

In the film, writer/director Nicole Holofcener expertly crafts the character played by Catherine Keener, exposing a woman whose occupation and personal interests conflict with her better senses. Set in Manhattan, married couple Kate and Alex (Oliver Platt) own a trendy furniture store and acquire their goods from the apartments of people who have recently died. At home, they’ve bought the apartment adjacent to theirs and are anxiously awaiting the passing of the elderly woman who lives in it so that they can expand their living space. Perhaps compensating for an otherwise insensitive/capitalistic lifestyle, Kate feels a deep sympathy (read, guilt) for those who appear to be in need and attempts to relinquish her guilt – whether it’s by offering money to the local transvestite bum or by handing out leftover food to anyone who “appears” to be homeless. Meanwhile, Kate and Alex must deal with their bratty teenage daughter who’s more concerned with some facial blemishes and keeping her eye on a kick-ass pair of jeans. G-Star S/S 2010 Behind The Scenes w/ Liv Tyler

Celebrated photographer, Anton Corbijn, returns to shoot his third major advertising campaign for denim innovators, G-Star RAW, with the new Spring/Summer 2010 collection, featuring actress and model, Liv Tyler.

The chosen campaign images feature Liv wearing pieces from the women’s Low-T mini-collection – a range designed for the strong, confident and sophisticated modern woman. The decision to use a solo female image as the focus for the campaign underlines G-Star’s commitment to its women’s collection and reinforces its core theme of ‘RAW Elegance.’

Liv Tyler is an internationally recognized model and actress, most famous for her portrayal of the ethereal and beautiful elf-princess, Arwen, in Lord of the Rings. Her striking looks and assured, independent style perfectly embodies the modern G-Star woman: tough and controlled, yet not afraid to be sensual. The striking campaign images bring to mind many of the iconic celebrity photographs Anton has shot over the past two decades.

Theophilus London – ‘I Want You’ Mixtape

There are very few musicians that received a co-sign from me and the rest of the team here at Limité. Roughly two years ago, I first met this young man through a few friends and chopped it up listening to tracks off his previous mixtape and playing NBA games on PS3. Since that moment, I’ve kept a close eye on his movement and enjoyed all the music he’s put out this far, and many of you have grown and learn to love his music via this site. Theophilus London presents his 3rd mixtape titled ‘I Want You’ and I want you all to download this work of art and celebrate life.

“Shortly before we got his third mixtape I WANT YOU, Theophilus London released a DIY promo video for the track “Life Of A Lover”. The record loops lazily to show us a new look: pretty girls dancing with each other at a show, young dudes headnodding, the crush of cameras and hard flash that now follows us everywhere we go, a cut to Theophilus in monochrome riding in a Vespa gang through Chinatown en route to Brooklyn and then back to the dance—a mic cord drifting slowly in and out of the frame and his hand reaching out to bring a girl on stage. That is all and this is it: inspired by Marvin Gaye’s self-imposed European exile and controversial performance of the national anthem at the 1983 NBA All Star game, I WANT YOU is a collection of dark jams that restlessly examines the promise of love beyond lifestyle. Touching on LA electrofunk, UK indie, tropical escapade and obscure afropop you never knew existed, these are stories from the way we live now: missed connections and misunderstandings, video chats and retweets, returns and deliverables. We know today is all black everything but more to the point: this is now noir as we know it. And this is Theophilus London.”

Keith Haring “Urban Legend” at Carmichael Gallery

Carmichael Gallery will present “Keith Haring – Urban Legend”, a selection of original works by world-renowned American artist Keith Haring. On display in the gallery’s rooms will be over 20 original works on canvas, paper, vintage street signs and a rare vinyl blow up “Radiant Baby Doll” from Haring’s 27th birthday party in 1985.

Recognized as one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century, Carmichael Gallery is proud to present an exhibition honoring his iconic visual language in honor of the 20th anniversary of his passing. Emerging in the Soho alternative art scene and rising to international fame in the mid-1980s, he is associated today with artists such as Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. His large, remarkably cohesive body of work, which spans just over a decade, is distinguished by iconic, bold figures and an expressive, socially-informed aesthetic, the effortless fluidity and accessible nature of which encompass elements from and bridge the gap between subversive and mainstream contemporary art.

There will be an opening reception for the exhibition on Saturday, May 8 from 7 to 10pm. The exhibition will run through May 29.
