Q&A: Alexis Mincolla

Throughout our journeys in life, we meet individuals that give off a certain energy and you immediately know that this person embodies a force that will impact culture and lifestyle. One of the many people I’ve met on my journey happens to be Alexis Mincolla, after meeting Alexis last summer at our mutual friend’s office (David Gensler of The KDU) and talking about his latest venture, Prometheus Spring, I knew he was onto something big. I recently spoke with Alexis to find out what’s the Overthrow is all about and what void he plans to fill with Prometheus Spring.

Please introduce yourself for those not familiar:

My full name is Alexis Van Ess Mincolla and I’m a 27 year old artist and serial entrepreneur.

Where are you originally from?

Well, I was a natural birth in the South Shore of Boston on a place very dear to my heart called Nantasket Beach. From there grew up in the New England boarding school system and then went off to do my university in Rome, Italy.

You’re a man of many hats, if you could lump up all your talents in one word, what would it be?

Alchemist.

What inspires you in a daily pursuit of life?

I like the idea of helping to catalyze thought in this world. Getting people to question the illusion of reality is a good thing as far as I’m concerned. When people’s mind stagnate we prevent the collective conscious from evolving.

You’ve recently co-founded Prometheus Spring along with Rahul Panchal? What void are you aiming to fill in the health beverage industry?

The simple answer would be the void of “spiced elixirs” but the rabbit whole of our mission goes a far deeper. We aim to share our experience in rediscovering the world’s history and richness through spice and the allegory that lies within it.

You’re one of the founding members of creative collective ‘Overthrow” that has made quite a name for itself in Miami. How did that come into evolution?

Overthrow, like any other of my projects is really just an evolved byproduct of discontent. My close friend, Sam Baum and I were looking for a solution to the disparities that prevented Miami’s creative talent from uniting, so we began to literally overthrow venues with conceptual events. The events gave the talent a forum to shine and the camaraderie followed. Now today I’m extremely fortunate work along side of some of today’s most talented and driven creative minds like Caleb Gauge, Tamara Sky, Charis Kirchheimer, Aban Sonia, Obi Tawil, Troy Kurtz and the Norwegian nightmare himself, Stian Roenning. Sorry had to do some shout outs… love you guys.

‘Overthrow’ has gained a cult-like following. From your point of view, why do you think that is?

Well for one, I think passion is an extremely contagious force and lord knows we aren’t lacking that.  I also think the fact that we aren’t afraid to embrace the Yin or darker side of our creativity, that it allows people to freely explore their own psyche without the fear of judgment.

You’re very recognizable by your mustache and shade. Any other wardrobe trademarks?

I’ve always enjoyed the aesthetic of black for as far back as I can remember. I even used to sport a “Raider Black” Starter jacket back when I was a little dude in Boston. I suppose the only thing that’s changed since then is that now behind the dark wardrobe lies some extremely colorful Egyptian tattoos.

Favorite places, cities, retreats?

New York is my meal and Miami is my dessert.  I really enjoy both of them in balance.

What new projects are you building on right now?

Right now were focused on building out the Overthrow Castle in Miami’s Wynwood Art district. It’s such an epic space and I couldn’t be more excited to call it our new head quarters. Its going to have a 900 sq ft art gallery as well as a 7,500 sq ft event space. Its really a game changer for Miami as we no longer have to play by the rules of other venues. This means no sound restrictions, 24 hour license, 1100 person capacity and all the sovereignty that should come with a castle.  We plan on throwing some really next level conceptual events and bringing a new social dynamic to the city of Miami. Things are about to get interesting.

What’s the most memorable moment of your career thus far?

That would probably have to be the day I saw the first bottle of Prometheus Springs on the shelf at Whole Foods in Tribeca. It had been like 3 years of imagining ourselves in that position before having manifested it. Needless to say there were some pretty monstrous high fives being thrown around that day.

Favorite local spot you feel people need to check out?

In Miami I’d have to say the new Overthrow Castle because of its grandiose absurdity and in New York I’d have to say Brinkley’s in SoHo because everything about that place is well done… oh and they have Prometheus on the menu.

What super hero powers do you wish you had?

That’s easy; flying for fun, mind control for utility and death ray vision for brutality.

If you could interview someone else, who and why?

That would probably have to be The Count of St. Germain, so I could know his true identity…. I have my theories.

Define success? A smile.
