The illustrious Erykah Badu comes back to grace us with a new album New Amerykah: Part Two and her first single and video ‘Window Seat’ takes inspiration from Matt & Kim’s ‘Lessons Learned’ video which opens their names to a whole new audience. Badu takes the same measure by stripping down to the nude in her liberated performance. Badu makes it all her own, translating the concept of public nudity into a form of pure honesty, of total fearlessness. And, as the Zapruder film/Kennedy assassination sub-theme shows, courage can get you killed. But standing up for who you are at your core worth it, because of… EVOLUTION. Check out Matt & Kim video after the jump. Continue reading “Erykah Badu’s ‘Window Seat’” »
The exhibition ‘All or nothing’ – Robert van ‘t Hoff, architect of a new society will show the oeuvre of architect and theorist Robert van ’t Hoff (1887-1979) and gives an insight into his personality. The work of the avant-garde architect, who was a member of the ‘De Stijl’ movement, reveals his deep social commitment. The exhibition will run from April 2 until August 29 2010.
An unusual feature of this retrospective exhibition is the complete interior of a study designed by Van ’t Hoff for his home in New Milton, which was recently donated to the museum by his daughter Megan van ’t Hoff (1922-2009). This interior and various other previously unknown objects featuring in the exhibition provide new insights into Van ’t Hoff’s struggle to rejuvenate architecture and realize his Utopian socialist philosophy. When living in an over populated city (Shanghai), what do you ultimately wish for? When traffic jams become unbearable, bumping into people as you walk down the street is second nature, and getting to work on time becomes inconceivable. What shall you wish for when you gaze at the stars at night? An En-V! that’s what!
The good folks over at GM in a joint venture with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp will soon bring three versions of a new “urban mobility” concept to World Expo 2010 in Shang-(cant get to the corner store without bumping into my boss, old babysitter, super hot ex-girlfriends and her dad)-hai. As I mentioned briefly before, Shanghai is a superb venue to display such a vehicle. With nearly 20 million people living in the entire metropolitan area, the city’s traffic is notoriously bad. Last week I had the privilege of meeting with G-Starand take a look at both their Spring/Summer 2010 collection as well as their Fall/Winter collection. Upon walking down the halls of their showroom you get a sense of heritage and victory for their accomplishments over the past twenty years from creating a distinct identity when it comes to the fusion of denim. Denim still remains the core of the G-Star empire but Spring/Summer 2010 offers a bit more with denim-complementary garments.
One of my favorite elements about G-Star is as a consumer you can find a smooth transition in their collection from street-wear to high-end tailored sophistication. After the are some of our favorite picks from their Spring/Summer 2010 Collection. Continue reading “G-Star SS2010 Men & Women’s Collection” »
The latest fall winter collection by the Paris fashion house Balenciaga features footwear that takes an architectural approach, mixing block heels with a collage of materials. The collection was designed by Pierre Hardy to match the high-tech materials of Nicolas Ghesquiere’s clothing designs. The shoes are made from a full range of materials that includes leather, wood, plastic, metal and a few newer high tech materials. The designs feature classic forms like the loafer and brogue, reinvented with the square heels made from collaged bits of plastic that are reminiscent of Memphis Design. The front of the shoes also have plastic elements tacked on underneath to raise them up. Other designs even have slip-in style front that take a design cue from water ski bindings. For the latest collaboration between Converse and CLOT, CLOT created a high top version of the Jack Purcell show. “The Jack Purcell shoe is kind of unassuming, sort of the underdog… I really like the style, and the front of the shoe really captivates me. When I started thinking about a collaboration with Converse this was the shoe that I wanted to work with,” says Kevin Poon, founder of CLOT. Continue reading “CLOT for Converse (PRODUCT) RED” »
The Keystone Design Union (KDU) is known for their innovative ideas and unique collaborations. Stationed in Brooklyn, New York founder David Gensler has extended his roots far beyond borough boundaries. I got the pleasure of checking out KDU’s latest project with RYZ, an Avante-Garde sneaker line, out of Portland, Oregon… by way of the world.
RYZ was founded in June of 2008, and is the off-spring of former Adidas America and Adidas Japan President, Rob Langstaff. Langstaff along with Creative Director, Todd Alan Breland, have successfully transformed the traditional slip-on sneaker into a visual artist’s playground. RYZ sneakers start out as a comfortable, flexible shell and are transformed to walking art. The essentially bare surfaces immediately become a canvas designed exclusively for artists to self express and translate their illustrations into fashion statements. Continue reading “RYZ Sneakers” »
