Q&A: Vintage Vandalizm

vintage-vandalizm-main

Name / Alias: Jasmin aka Vintage Vandalizm

Where are you originally from? Queens, NY

What made you launch Vintage Vandalizm? I wanted to be heard. I started a blog so I could express myself emotionally & fashionably. Blogs these days are less personal, all about what’s new, what’s in and blah blah blah… where are your opinions? You go through endless blogs, seeing the same things and you find yourself bored to death wanting more, wanting to know if the person behind this blog has a soul… I put my soul into my blog, I give it all I’ve got.

What attracts you to Bettie Page and Pin-up culture overall? I love Bettie Page because there is no one in the world even remotely parallel to who she was. Countless women like myself will cut their bangs short, strike her poses and will tighten our corsets to amount to who she is, but NO one can replace that woman. Her figure was immaculate and that’s what I love about the pinup culture, it was inviting to women of all shapes and sizes & we need that in this “thin is in” society. Women had the most amazing fashion sense, they groomed themselves to perfection, and they were elegant as ever.

What inspires you in a daily pursuit of life? A lot of things inspire me, I am an artist so I pretty much find beauty in everything. I am heavily inspired by the history of fashion from the 1800s all the way to the 1960s. I admire artists like Olivia De Berardinis, Michael Turner, and now Tim Burton who is my new ultimate favorite. These are all the people & things that inspire me to make my own mark on the world, to be my own legend or even someone people admire.

What fashion capital interests you the most? Japan!

Any wardrobe trademarks? People either recognize me for my thick eyeliner, my hair, or my Cuban legged stockings with a back seam lol.

Top 5 songs on your playlist?

- Bloc Party – Signs

- TV on the Radio -Wolf like me

- Little Dragon – Feather

- Q.Lazarrus – Goodbye horses

- Radiohead – Your all I need

What designers do you feel people should begin to pay attention to? I think people need to venture out, stop paying so much attention to JUST Gucci, LV, and Chanel (even though I love you). I have found really amazing things recently by Lerario Beatriz, Coven, and Sophia Kokosalaki. After checking out there collections I was completely amazed at how great some designers are who aren’t mainstream yet.

Favorite places, cities, retreats? To be honest, I love the Lower East Side of Manhattan. I rather be there eating a crepe at the Creperie or downing a cupcake from Sugar Sweet Sunshine than anywhere in the world. Then again, I haven’t been to many places out of the US. Who knows?

What new projects are you building on right now? I really want to start a clothing line, but as a one woman show it has its difficulties but I am determined. I’m not much of a quitter so I could never doubt myself. I am also trying to upgrade my website so I could start selling accessories and vintage clothing for anyone who doesn’t mind paying better prices for vintage.

What’s the most memorable moment of your career thus far? I have many… I have met such wonderful people who are now long term friends, people who have beautiful minds and ideas, and most importantly people who believe in me.

Favorite local spot you feel people need to check out? Go to Magnolia Bakery and get yourself a large Banana pudding… you’ll thank me later.

What super hero powers do you wish you had? I wouldn’t mind having the power of Phoenix, she was the shit. Then again I’d probably blow up half of this city so maybe being mortal is a good thing :)

If you could interview someone else, who and why? Of course it would be Bettie Page, but she’s way up high teasing all of the angels up there.

Define success? Success is accomplishing your dreams, NEVER GIVING UP, giving it your all, and even if you fail, it is still a success because you will always learn from your failures.
