Schmatta: Rags to Riches to Rags

Once a vibrant and important cornerstone to not only New York but the whole of the United States, the Garment Industry in New York has changed drastically as much of the production focus shifts to cheaper means in other countries. The HBO documentary Schmatta: Rags to Riches to Rags documents the rise and fall of such a once integral aspect of the United States economy. The docmentary premiered last week on Monday, October 19th at 9 pm exclusively on HBO.

Schmatta: Rags To Riches To Rags brings to life the vibrant, unexpected history of the Garment District which for many years was the heart and soul of Midtown Manhattan, but is now in danger of disappearing. For thousands of immigrants the garment industry was a path to their American Dream, but today most of those jobs are gone. A microcosm of the economic and social forces transforming our nation over the past one hundred years, Schmatta: Rags To Riches To Rags tells the story of this vanishing industry through the voices of the people who have experienced its highs and lows.

Morehouse College Policy Bans Sagging

sagging-jeans

In an attempt to eliminate “inappropriate attire,” prestigious HBCU and private institution Morehouse College has adopted a policy that bans sagging and other styles associated with Hip-Hop culture. The “Appropriate Attire Policy” initiative is the product of Morehouse President Michael Franklin, who is seeking to reestablish what he’s coined as the modern “Renaissance Man.” That individual, Franklin states, possesses the “5 Wells” of being well-spoken, well-read, well-traveled, well-dressed, and well-balanced. Sagging is said to have originated in the penal system, where prisoners were unable to keep their pants up due to belt confiscations to prevent suicides and murder. Although viewed as a style for juveniles, some prominent Hip-Hop artists in their 30s and 40s still utilize sagging in videos, concert, and award show appearances. Along with the new sagging ban, students will not be allowed to sport any form of grillz, do-rags, hats, “stunna shades,” hoods, or pajamas to class.

Lil Wayne “Swag Surfin”

lil-wayne-terry-richardson-gq-interviewPhoto by Terry Richardson for GQ

If my memory serves me right, this is Weezie’s first post on Limité (clap it up) and receiving the news about him serving 8 months in the pin on gun charges is disappointing, maybe this will get a chance for rappers to come up with good music on their own while Mr. Featured on Every Damn Song will be penning up verses alongside of another Hip-Hop champ. Anyway, being locked up certainly isn’t going to slow Wayne down as he’s definitely already got a bunch of material and plans for two albums by December, the upcoming No Ceilings mixtape from which this song came, plus whatever else he decides to record before his sentencing in February…and you know Drake will drown us while his boss is out of the office.
