Most of us step over it or toss it in the trash, but to Justin Gignac New York City garbage is art. Gignac began selling garbage in 2001 after a co-worker challenged the importance of package design. To prove that person wrong, Gignac set out to find something that no one in their right mind would by or package. Looking around the Times Square, garbage was the perfect answer. Eight years later, over 1,200 NYC Garbage cubes have been sold, and now reside in more than 25 countries around the world.
In addition to the typical New York Garbage, Gignac has also produced a number of special edition cubes: The Republican National Convention, Opening Day at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, New Year’s Eve in Times Square and even St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin, Ireland, on behalf of the Dublin City Council.
