Nooka Inc. has teamed up with legendary artists and toy designers Jeremy Madl, Ilovedust, Shin Tanaka and Matthew Waldman to commemorate the release of the new mini NookaNooka. Created by Waldman, the NookaNooka is an urban vinyl collector’s toy. Not only is it made of similar materials as other Nooka products, it also represents our innovative approach to design, pushing the limits of creativity and changing the way people think about objects.
The NookaNooka’s physiology is transient, eternal in his world and ephemeral in ours – beyond imagination – like something you are told is not real, like something you can’t taste, but can feel. Jeremy Madl, ilovedust, Shin Tanaka and Matthew Waldman displayed their artistic talent by designing their own custom mini NookaNooka collabs. Look for the mini NookaNooka to be released in November 2009.
Depsite the fact that European colonization of Africa, the Americas, and several other continents initially took place centuries ago, the remnants of the institutionalized disaster continues to plague societies all over the world. Some radicals and blatantly ignorant persons may argue that racism has dissolved and is merely a dramatized issue that the oppressed continue to hold on to. On the contrary racism is prevalent and Whites and Blacks remain divided today.
Divided does not necessarily mean geographically segregated; however, obvious divisions of social and economic statuses, cannot be simply regarded as mere coincidence. The fact that prior to years of independence many African countries remain dependent on whites; a relationship that is not necessarily by choice, but a tragic reality of years of involuntary codependence. For those unacquainted, “Cara Cuello” (NeckFace) is an anonymous graffiti artist – kind of like Banksy (but not) – who has been a huge influence in skateboarding the past few years. His art usually takes on a “frightening” or “dark” persona, so it’s only appropriate that he would have an exhibit in Miami on Halloween. Details:
Neckface will turn Miami inside out for his premiere solo exhibition in the Magic City. This Halloween night, Neckface will deconstruct all 10,000 square feet of O.H.W.O.W. and build a world like no other. Featuring a large-scale haunted house installation, complete with Neckface’s iconic imagery, the Devil’s Disciple exhibition is designed to frighten viewers as they enter the space.
There’s no doubt that Devil’s Disciple will be a breakout exhibition for Neckface. The work created will surely be considered his finest to date and is anticipated to redefine him and endear him to a whole new legion of fans.
Venue: Our House – West of Wynwood

We all remember the Hillary – Barack infighting, and how the nation and all its various ethnic-racial and gender lines subsequently went haywire. Race and gender fought to hold central stage in American politics and, although we now have a black president, I dare say we still have significant skeletons in our closet when it comes to the media and powerful women. Take Michelle Rhee, Chancellor of DC Public Schools since 2007, and controversially portrayed and yes fierce, if perhaps misunderstood, advocate for DC school children.
In a city where private schools overflow with affluent sons and daughters of politicians, public schools are a near disaster. And Rhee has stepped up to the plate with so-called “tough-talk” and “arrogance” that, in my opinion, would be a necessary requirement for the job. This is DC, folks: generations of educational disinvestment and disenfranchisement. Not a walk in the park. However, Rhee has been painted as an unwanted intruder. An English-language remake of Theo Van Gogh’s award winning 1996 Dutch film, BLIND DATE is the story of an estranged couple (Stanley Tucci, starring and directing, and Patricia Clarkson) who are desperately trying to reconcile after the tragic death of their daughter. Unable to face either their grief or each other, they go a series of “blind dates”, each placing personal ads in the paper and pretending to be strangers when they meet. They do this over and over again, playing a series of different roles, in an attempt to overcome the pain and rebuild their shattered relationship. When controversial filmmaker Theo van Gogh was shot and killed in cold blood in 2004 by a religious fundamentalist angered over the portrayal of Islam in one of his short films, the idea to remake three of his favorite films in English, with Hollywood stars, was born. This is the second film in said trilogy, after Steve Buscemi’s INTERVIEW.

Thi Chien will make his debut at GalleryBar with a new exhibit of photographs entitled Addiction. The self-taught artist will showcase a number of powerful images that convey in depth views on individuals and their struggles with Substance Abuse. Through his images, the artist hopes to create a heightened sense of drug awareness and prevention by engaging the viewer in thought and self-reflection. From power and money to sex and drugs, addictions are everywhere and Thi Chien would like to showcase these addictions through a book series titled Addiction. Substance Abuse is the first of the 4 volumes to be completed.
“There are addictions everywhere we look,” says photographer Thi Chien. “What I wanted to do with this collection was focus in and draw attention to the bad ones. One day I hope to create a book series dedicated to the topic, but for now I hope that my work provokes thought and emotion within all who view it.”
GBH worked with the Puma retail team to make a Ferrari Formula One car using PUMA motorsport clothing. You can see how the installation at the Carnaby Street store in London was put together in the video below.
Strukt Design Studio created this digital wallpaper for an office space in Vienna using only a wall and digital projectors. The studio was given creative freedom on the project and developed a system to project video and other content onto the walls completely undistorted. Using scripting software and projectors, the imagery can be scaled to any architectural surface, projecting on a flat wall or intricately detailed façade. this particular installation already had a black and white strip pattern, so the designs experimented with that. In addition to the simple coloured bands they also developed a Pacman animation.
Poverty is not an accident. 1492 marks the birth of modern times when the conquistadors violently extracted gold and other natural resources. Since then, our economic system has been financed by the poor by forcing them to give up their land and access to natural resources, then through unfair trade, debt repayment and unjust taxes on labor and consumption. This system was carefully built and maintained by the free market policies, resource monopolies and structural adjustment programs by the World Bank and the IMF.
Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, VISUAL ACOUSTICS celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, the world’s greatest architectural photographer, whose images brought modern architecture to the American mainstream. Shulman, who passed away this year, captured the work of nearly every major modern and progressive architect since the 1930s including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, and Frank Gehry. His images epitomized the singular beauty of Southern California’s modernist movement and brought its iconic structures to the attention of the general public. This unique film is both a testament to the evolution of modern architecture and a joyful portrait of the magnetic, whip-smart gentleman who chronicled it with his unforgettable images.
