10,000LB Hamburger Tour NYC

burgernyc

The NYC date of the 10,000LB Hamburger Tour is an extra-special one. It’s basically the Fool’s Gold “hometown” show, buoyed by all the extra energy of A-Trak, Treasure Fingers, and Theophilus London rocking out for their best friends and neighbors (plus the added bonus of our UK pals Jack Beats flying over to play, using the show to kick off a North American tour of their own), general TGIF craziness, 19+ at the door… IT’S KIND OF LIKE A BIG DEAL.

So with all that in mind, we’re psyched to give you a number of chances to get into the show for free ninety nine. You can win tix from RCRD LBL and Green Shoelace, and RSVP for $1 entry (and $1 drinks) before midnight here. And hey, if you just wanna buy regular tickets, that’s cool too.

Get Up, Stand Up

marc-jacobs-taxes-tees

Another reason to love Marc Jacobs: he knows how to make a statement. This past week, two new t-shirts made their debut at the Marc by Marc Jacobs Accessories store in New York, with an unmistakable message: equal rights. The tees, which are limited-edition and selling for $24 a pop, demand “I pay my taxes, I want my RIGHTS!” When combined with Jacobs’ clever designs, they succeed in getting their message across-in style.

Sruli Recht

sruli-recht-belt

A mere glimpse into the enthralling mind of clothing designer, sculptor, and master constructor Sruli Recht is like a psychedelic three-dimensional tour of the Louve, African Safari, and outer space combined. His ability to communicate through design is super-natural and highly unique.  And if his clothing, shoes, and various other creations are his way of sharing his inner thoughts with the world, then it is safe to say that he is pure genius. A Mirror Distorted

andrea-michaelsson

Opening Reception: Thursday August 6 2009 / 7.00pm – 10.00pm
August 6 – August 27 2009
Carmichael Gallery / 1257 N. La Brea Ave / West Hollywood CA 90038

Carmichael Gallery is proud to present A Mirror Distorted, an all-female international group show featuring new works on canvas, paper and mixed media fabric by artists Andrea Michaelsson, Candice Tripp, Cherri Wood and Pam Glew. Retro chic and urban grit unite in the work of Andrea Michaelsson, whose portraits of starlets and beauties exude unabashed spontaneity and sophisticated feminism. Using a lush range of acrylic, watercolor, ink and spray paint, she interprets the glamour of early twentieth century American fashion and cinema with an ironic European edge.

Candice Tripp has produced a series of oil and inks on canvas entitled “Fib-Lore”. The pieces illustrate classic lies told to children to discourage naughty behavior, yet which instill a fear that does more harm than good. While Candice’s subject matter and use of negative space are intentionally disturbing, her innocence and wit furnish the scenes with a burst of narrative force. Best in the West

Best in the West (2006)
556 West 22nd Street, New York, NY
Director: Maryam Kashani
*7/29/09*

Director Kashani’s first-person documentary focuses on her father and his close-knit group of male friends who maintained their tight bonds after emigrating from Iran to San Francisco in the 1960s and ’70s. Their personal stories are interwoven with a political and industrial history of Iran and the struggle to control the country’s most coveted natural resource: oil.

Chelsea Art Museum is proud to present the Iran Inside Out Film Series in collaboration with Rooftop Films and ArteEast. This film series will present brilliant feature and short films as well as documentaries by well-established and emerging Iranian directors that are designed to compliment CAM’s ground-breaking exhibition, Iran Inside Out. The films are organized thematically to match the exhibition’s five pillars: war and politics, gender and sexuality, culture as commodity, reinventing traditional art forms and street culture within Tehran. Maxwell’s BLACKsummers’night

maxwell-blacksummernightIt was his delicate organic and soulful voice, charming smile, and curly fro that first attracted everyone to Brooklyn native Maxwell, over a decade ago.  Now, after an eight-year hiatus Maxwell has remained true to his R &B/Neo Soul origins with his latest LP BLACKsummers’night.

After a rocky road in the industry, going against the norm as one of the key figures in the sub genre, neo-soul movement, Maxwell has delivered a breath of fresh air to the R&B scene, an industry that has become obsessed with auto tune. On tracks like “Pretty Wings”(his first single of the LP), “Fistful of Tears”, and “Cold” the mesmerizing sounds of the piano, guitars, bass, and drums provide the perfect backdrop for Maxwell to sing episodes of relationship and broken love stories that all mature audiences can relate to.
