The Uniform Project – 1 Dress 365 Days

Some of us grew up in a childhood where you had to experience attending school in a uniform. Many of us kicked and screamed but in the end we ran with the flow, and we added our own twist to show off our individuality. The Uniform Project is taking the uniform from the school halls and bringing it to the masses here on the internet.

Starting May 2009, The Uniform Project have pledged to wear one dress for one year as an exercise in fashion philanthropy. Here’s how it works: There are 7 identical dresses, one for each day of the week. Every day they will reinvent the dress with layers, accessories and all kinds of accouterments, the majority of which will be vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down goodies.

The dress was designed and created by Eliza Starbuck. She took inspiration from one of Sheena Matheiken many staple dresses, improved the shape and fit to add on some seasonal versatility, like the ever changing New York summer weather to it’s blizzard-friendly winters. The dress is designed so it can be worn both ways, front and back.

The Uniform Project is also a year-long fundraiser for the Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots movement that is revolutionizing education in India. At the end of the year, all contributions will go toward Akanksha’s School Project to fund uniforms and other educational expenses for slum children in India.

Check out their site daily to see the many creations they will come up with. View our favorite selections after the jump.
