Coming from a city as big as NYC is and having near death experiences with cyclist who come speeding from behind automobiles has called for the need to have bike lanes all for themselves. The success of bike lanes has improved the safety of pedestrians, motorist and cyclist but due to the high cost of installation, bike lanes are not widely available. Instead of forcing cyclists to adapt their behavior to the existing infrastructure, the bike lane should adapt to the cyclist. LightLane was originally created for a design competition to promote commuting by bicycle. Although the concept did not win, the response was overwhelming, encouraging the inventors to continue development.
