The Last International Playboy

In theaters: June 12, 2009

Roswell star Jason Behr assumes the role of a New York City playboy who sinks into a deep depression after learning that his childhood love is engaged to another man. Still haunted by his mother’s recent suicide, professional charmer Jack Frost (Behr) is shattered to discover that his one true love (Monet Mazur) is about to take the plunge with another man. As Jack begins spiraling into a self-destructive cycle of whisky and reckless behavior, his best friends Ozzy (Krysten Ritter), Scotch (Mike Landry), and Kate (Lucy Gordon) struggle to find a means of jarring their depressed pal back to reality. Strangely enough, it isn’t Jack’s grown-up friends who offer him the most useful relationship advice, but his eleven year-old neighbor Sophie (India Ennenga), whose unusually wise and thoughtful words have a special way of helping the self-absorbed urbanite shake off the nostalgia and excess that may ultimately consume him.

Dark ‘Toons: Optical Illusions

FRIDAY, MAY 29
VARMINTSVenue: on the roof of the Open Road Rooftop
Address: 350 Grand Street at Essex
Starting at 9pm
Tickets: $9 at the door or online at going.com

The infirm will walk, the dead will dance, cities will rise up from the earth, and the trees themselves will rebel. Walls will crawl and heads will roll…and then rejoin their host bodies. Anything can happen in a cartoon, and this exhilarating collection of short animated films from all over the world displays all that can be done with the form.

Independent animators have all the freedom that a filmmaker could ever hope for—if an animator has the talent and the time, then she can take any image that dances through her dreams and bring it to life. These films defy expectations and bring us images that have never been seen before–kinetic visions that defy logic yet seem to make sense to some dark corner of our subconscious.

Before the films, Sound Fix presents Javelin . And after the films, everyone in attendance is invited to the Rooftop Films after party at Fontana’s where we will be serving complimentary Radeberger Pilsner until 1 AM and hanging out with the filmmakers and the band.

Cassius Eyewear Summer Collection

Defined by the ideology that logos should be intentionally subtle and that the shape and design of the frames themselves should define the look and feel, Cassius explicitly evokes 20th century systems for scale of architectural proportion and the innovation commonly associated with Walter Gropius and the Bauhaus movement. Cassius applies the sharp clean lines, beautiful solid monochrome colors and classic silhouettes to a range that is individual.

Celebrating its first year anniversary this summer, Cassius gives us a look into their range of eyewear. To ensure exclusivity, numbers are limited to 300 in each style and are handcrafted from European acetate and fitted with CR39 protected lenses with a rating of UV400. We’ve gathered our favorites from their summer collection and present them to you. Enjoy! Continue reading “Cassius Eyewear Summer Collection” »

Santigold – ‘Your Voice’

Remember last summer when Santogold (then) was pumping from everywhere speaker you came across. Santigold (now) has laid low after giving us a great summer last year of jams and a smart move we might add. After receiving hundreds of remixes to her hits “Creator” and “L.E.S. Artistes” and tying the knot with Trouble Andrews, the Brooklynite has done quite well for herself with a few collaborations and now she’s leaked a nice little treat, “Your Voice” the smooth dub-step that we can listen to while drinking Red Stripe.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The Girlfriend Experience

Set in the weeks leading up to the 2008 presidential election, THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE is five days in the life of Chelsea (adult film star Sasha Grey in her mainstream film debut), an ultra high-end Manhattan call girl who offers more than sex to her clients, but companionship and conversation – “the girlfriend experience.” Chelsea thinks she has her life totally under control-she feels her future is secure because she runs her own business her own way, makes $2000 an hour, and has a devoted boyfriend (Chris Santos) who accepts her lifestyle. But when you’re in the business of meeting people, you never know who you’re going to meet… The twentieth film from Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh, THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE is a sexy, gorgeously shot time capsule from the not-too-distant past.
