SA-RA – Nuclear Evolution: The Age Of Love

The dynamic Soul-trio, Sa-Ra has been working in the studio intensely over the last several months, and they’re ready to let the world hear their new album Nuclear Evolution: The Age of Love, delivering the otherworldly opus and bombastic soul sounds with a unique and unconstrained blend of street wit, dirty-sex talk, tall stories, intergalactic future sounds.

If you got the privilege of listening to their first album, you’re well aware of the twisted yet rather feel-good vibe their all about. According to the list of high-profile artists requesting their production services their sound has an infectious global spread and appeal. Most recently SRCP have been making their mystical magical soulful productions for Erykah Badu. Serving as her associate producers, they wrote, appeared, and produced on seven of the tracks from her 2008 album New Amerykahalbum. She returns the favor with a guest appearance on “Dirty Beauty” on Nuclear Evolution. Other collaborators that SRCP have worked with include Pharoahe Monche (on“Agent Orange” track), John Legend, Andre 3000, Black Eyed Peas, Talib Kweli, J Dilla, Fonzworth Bentley, Heavy D, Common, Iggy Pop, Herbie Hancock, Dr. Dre, Jill Scott, and Jurassic 5. Precious – trailer

I can remember back in High School when all the girls were reading this book, and how they sat around and discussed the situations that unfolded for the character and how they knew someone who went through a similar situation. Please don’t be a victim.

Lee Daniels’s “Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire” is a vibrant, honest and resoundingly hopeful film about the human capacity to grow and overcome.

Set in Harlem in 1987, it is the story of Claireece “Precious” Jones (Gabourey Sidibe), a sixteen-year-old African-American girl born into a life no one would want. She’s pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother (Mo’Nique), a poisonously angry woman who abuses her emotionally and physically. School is a place of chaos, and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and an awful secret: she can neither read nor write.

Precious may sometimes be down, but she is never out. Beneath her impassive expression is a watchful, curious young woman with an inchoate but unshakeable sense that other possibilities exist for her. Threatened with expulsion, Precious is offered the chance to transfer to an alternative school, Each One/Teach One. Precious doesn’t know the meaning of “alternative,” but her instincts tell her this is the chance she has been waiting for. In the literacy workshop taught by the patient yet firm Ms. Rain (Paula Patton), Precious begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination.

Barack Obama: The Freshman

M+B Gallery
May 28th – July 18th
Opening Reception May 28th 6 – 9pm
612 North Almont Drive
Los Angeles, CA 90069

As the history books are getting republished as we speak (or type), we’ve all are witnesses to this life-changing phenomena, but a even more lucky young lady by the name of Lisa Jack got the privilege of hanging and probably indulging in a smoke or two with future president of the free world. These photos were taken when Barack was a freshman at Occidental College sporting a wide-brimmed Panama and gracefully puffing on a cigarette.

Today marks the opening of an exhibition showcasing 21 of the 36 photos taken from this series at West Hollywood’s M+B Gallery. The images will be on display until 18th July. I’m urging all our fellow Californians to make a pilgrimage and take in these amazing photos. Check some samples from the series after the jump. Continue reading “Barack Obama: The Freshman” »

Men We Love: Conan O’Brien

Self-deprecating. There, I said it. The one word that is most often used to describe Conan O’Brien is out of the way. Before continuing, I must disclose my undying man love for “the Cone Bone,” as my friend Christie and I refer to him. One of my happiest moments was when I shook the Man’s hand while sitting in the front row of his studio before a taping of Late Night – my fourth time there. Despite some of the lackluster guests I’ve witnessed both live and on TV, it’s Conan’s own brand of humor that keeps drawing me back. I LOL at robot pimps and FedEx popes. Preparation H always feels best when a big-eared dude rubs it on. And is it normal that manatees make me horny? (That’s probably enough to make anyone who’s unfamiliar log off and say a prayer for my soul.)

Raised in Brookline, Mass., Conan was valedictorian of his high school’s 1981 senior class before attending Harvard, where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in History and Literature. So how does a background often shared by important businessmen, lawyers, and presidents lead a person to late-night television, where bathroom humor entertains the bourgeois and fart jokes wash over the likes of me with the sophistication of a masturbating bear?
