Blabac Photo: The Art of Skateboarding Photography

They say things look much better in slow motion but to freeze action and analyze it for all it’s worth is beyond beautiful. Mike Blabac does exactly that; rides around with greatest skateboards of our generation and documents history. Getting his first camera at age 13 and appreciated the art form when he glances at a skateboard magazine. In the early ’90s, Blabac caught his first break. He began taking pictures of a rising skater named Josh Kalis, and an image off the first roll he shot ran as a full page in TransWorld SKATEboarding magazine. In the ’90s, Blabac moved to California, where his career took off. He began shooting spreads and covers for the top skateboard magazines, including Thrasher and Skateboarder, and eventually became staff photographer for Mad Circle and Girl Skateboards. In 1999, Blabac joined friends Ken Block and Damon Way and helped to shape the image of their at their rapidly expanding skate shoe company, DC Shoes.

Blabac Photo: The Art of Skateboarding Photography is a stunning chronicle of a youth movement as seen through the lens of Mike Blabac, a man who is as dedicated to his craft as he is to the skateboarding lifestyle that inspired it. For millions of people around the world, skateboarding is more than a mere hobby or a sport—it’s a way of life that has shaped everything from fashion and music, to video games and art. Blabac Photo proves that point with 300 awe-inspiring images that communicate the stories and exploits of some of the most creative athletes to ever step on a skateboard including Eric Koston, Stevie Williams, Colin McKay, Rob Dyrdek, and Danny Way. As skateboarding evolved over time, from a hobby for kids on the Venice boardwalk into a global culture, skate legends were born, records were broken, titans of industry materialized—and Mike Blabac was there to document the history of the movement as it developed before his eyes.

Top 10 Places to Get Devoured by a Cougar

There’s no denying that there is a large group of older women that crave younger men from time to time (or all the time). It’s been proven in films such as The Graduate, American Pie and fantasies all over the globe. These older women, more popularly known as cougars come in very handy; they offer counseling, networking, financial help and more importantly, they offer stress-free sex…really good stress-free sex at that.

BlackBooks’s Ben Barna gives us the inside scoop on where to find these “kind” women around the New York city area, you better believe these locations are going in the iPhone ASAP.

Here’s a excerpt:

Nikki Beach A cougar oasis, if you will. No small coincidence that the first cougar I tamed was also named Nikki Beach (she was an amateur porn star). This is where you go to get your tiki torched.

Drake f. Nikki Minaj, “Best I Ever Had” Remix

We’re not very big on listening to the radio due to the repetitive brainwashing that takes place but after this beautiful weekend when cars and BBQ’s were bumping the latest and greatest. We’ve heard Drake about 35 times during a 72hr period which was a bit of a surprise to us being that Drake has been on the grind scene heavy in Canada but then we thought why should we be surprised when he’s signed to Lil Wayne’s label; knowing that Wizzie is a walking billboard and will do whatever in his power (or Baby’s) to get his artist on the air. This still won’t get us to listen to the radio.

Luise & Franck

The Definition of A Neutral Blend

When I discovered Luise & Franck I was definitely Überrumpeln! Okay my little keen Limite’ goers, for those of you who can’t find your German to English dictionaries that’s German for “taken by surprise”. Say it with me…”Uyber-Roomp-elt”. Now that you have learned something new, give AYURI credit for that new wrinkle in your brain!

Luise Schwarze and Franck Pouch behind the label are two Franco – (East) German designers heading the modernist fashion revolution in menswear. From the time they came together in 2005 until 2007 when their first collection was launched in Paris, they were fused with a unique fashion sense described with the term “The Minimalist Expression”. This term is heavily used in the art world to describe simple, yet fresh and brilliant forms of art design. These two designers have found a way to bring this term to the fashion world and evolve it with the use of fabric. They credit their inspiration in general to the realms of “expressionist art, psyche folk music, and post modern architecture.” Continue reading “Luise & Franck” »

Two down. Ride away.

With the economy the way it is, people are looking for other forms of transportation and it seems that biking has taken the forefront. And with advantages like not having to deal with ridiculous traffic and rockstar parking everywhere you go, why would anyone not want to ride a bike?! Citizens have caught on to the effectiveness of biking, but more specifically the fixed gear craze, and can be seen roaming the streets at every corner. Kids are bombing massive hills and racing cars right off the line. The whole allure to this style of biking is minimalist aspect of not having gears to shift or brakes to depend on to stop. Instead you use your leg power to lock up the drive train causing the back tire to skid, thus slowing you down. But with this come one detail that is overlooked by many of those who try riding one, no coasting! So not only do you get around traffic more efficiently but you also get a cardio workout like you’ve never had before.

But just riding a fixed gear bike around isn’t what keeps most of its riders hooked. It’s the collective bike community made up of all different sorts of people who all share the same love for cycling. Organized bike rides have taken over your weekly bowling night and the bike culture is stronger than ever with progressive riders from coast to coast. Midnight Ridazz hosts info on almost every ride imaginable in the SoCal area. Find meet up spots and times to each ride and even check the pace for each ride. Also be sure to check out Prolly’s blog to get the latest news on what’s going on on the east coast and hit up Tracko to get the updates on the westside. Both of these guys are big voices in the cycling community and they both tell it as it is. Together, the bike community works diligently to improve roadways to accommodate bike lanes, update bike laws to provide better protection for cyclists on the road, and to have more bike racks installed around the city. So whether you’re riding a fixed gear, road, bmx, or any other bike in the city you can appreciate the road we all share and the camaraderie of being on two wheels.
