‘OK house’ by Baqueratta

Yoshiyuki Moriyama’s Tokyo based architecture practice, Baqueratta, specializes in residential architecture, creating experimental homes for Japan’s tiny lot sizes. One of the firm’s buildings in Tokyo is the ‘OK house.’ Unlike the firm’s other works, this home is dark and heavy looking from the outside. A large black volume balances atop a smaller one. No door is in sight, just a set of stairs which can be lowered or raised to close off the home completely. The inside of the home is a light and primarily white space. The main living area features a full wall of glass doors, which opens up onto a small garden space. And the bedroom sits below it which also opens up onto its own garden.

History of X-rated Movie Posters

Historians have dated the origins of modern pornography to the 1650′s. X-rated movies can be traced back to the beginning of cinema in the late nineteenth century. During this time, they were known as exploitation or stag movies. ‘Loop’ movies, showing repetitive sex action, were often screened in brothels to excite the (predominantly male) audience.

The twentieth century saw a constant battle between the entertainment industry and the censors, particularly when it came to the X-rated movie. From the late 1950s to the mid 1970s, a majority of adult movies released in America were porn or stag movies. These were produced abroad, often in Scandinavia and the Far East, and many were classified as Art Movies in an attempt to circumvent the censors.

X-rated movies were shown in very few screens in America and even fewer cinemas would have displayed their posters. As a result, hardly any posters were printed; typically, barely a handful of each are known to have survived. Perhaps more so than mainstream movie posters, X-rated posters reveal what was really going on in society at that time.

X-Rated Collection gives a collection of over 350 covers. Click here to view them.

Please view responsibly as these images are not suitable for the work environment… unless you work in the porn industry.

When Early Hype Meets Oscar Gold

Ledger Becomes the Second Actor to Win a Posthumous Oscar

July 18, 2008—the date on which The Dark Knight was born. Filmgoers eagerly flocked to sold-out screenings as if they were shepherds hoping to catch a glimpse of the new-born Christ. On July 18, the film was born to audiences—but the hype was conceived several months earlier.

For those of us who practically make a career out of going to the movies, Oscar Sunday rates up there with Christmas. Much like the holiday, the day, itself—though exciting—isn’t as thrilling as the weeks beforehand where the speculation of nominees and the prognostication of the winners consumes us. We send out Oscar party invitations much the same way we send out holiday cards. We try to figure out who’s going to win a golden statue, much the same way we shake gifts, trying to figure out what’s inside. And when it’s over—well, a slight disappointment overcomes us and we begin to look forward to next year. Continue reading “When Early Hype Meets Oscar Gold” »

John Patrick Men’s Organic Fall Collection 2009

John Patrick’s Eco fashion collection for the Fall 2009 season steps away from his traditional soft, breezy looks with previous collections featuring lots of white, baby blues and beige. This Fall Collection blends a simple and classic mood for his menswear line. Items like the beige trench coat pictured after the jump shows the potential of organic materials in men’s outerwear, while other items such as a patchwork-plaid shirt features the range’s more detailed side.

Inhabitat attended his fashion week ‘Bake Sale’ this past week to check out his fall collection, and we were both surprised and intrigued by the Lynchian Film Noir looks that have crept into JPO’s aesthetic for Fall 2009.
