I found it by accident on the southwest corner of 14th and 8th on a cold Friday night. Not planning on hitting a club that night, I stood near the door, dressed rather relaxed in a pair of multi-colored sneakers, jeans, and a matching t-shirt. Meanwhile, a mostly urban crowd of black and Hispanic gay men in their early twenties flashed there ID’s and entered a club with no name on the door. I decided to follow suit and see if this would perhaps be my new favorite hotspot for my Friday nights. The music echoing up to meet me consisted of some of the newest and hottest tracks in hip-hop. A good start, I thought to myself as I walked past the bouncer. I should’ve known better when I followed a flight of stairs down into what appeared to be a red-lighted basement. Name / Alias: J*WLS
Where are you originally from?
From a rainy-but-heart-warming city in the north of France called Lille.
What do you currently do for a living? I’m a freelance illustrator/graphic designer
When did your love for art come into existence?
Since I got a pencil in my hand… My family always pushed me to do all kind of creative workshops since I was very young. I also grew up as a single child, so I built up my little own inside world, always scribbling out its foundations. Continue reading “Q&A: J*WLS” »
Losing $98.8 million dollars in Q4 hasn’t stopped the luxury retailer from hiring Shepard Fairey for his Russian Communist-inspired artwork. Saks hired Fairey to create limited edition bags, store windows, catalogs and in-store presentation which will hit stores on March 12.
Fairey, who created the “Obey” street campaign as well the famous President Obama “Hope” campaign poster, went with a propagandist representation of Saks’ six-year-old “Want it!” campaign. Block lettering in red, black and white colors says: “Show your arms: Short-sleeve jackets” and “Stride forth in aggressive shows.”
Maybe this is a cry for help from other markets since Saks could use the attention. The 104-store chain announced this week that it lost $98.8 million in Q4. It predicted a 4 percent sales increase during the holidays. However, sales fell 15.3 percent.
CEO Stephen Sadove abandoned Saks’ prior strategy of discounting prestige brands. Instead, it will add a mix of less expensive products. “This current macroeconomic and retail landscape perhaps is the most challenging that the company has faced in its 84-year history,” he said in a statement.
Still, “We continue to make targeted investment sin our strategic merchandising, marketing and selling initiatives.” Saks spent $35 million on media, excluding online, in 2008, per Nielsen Monitor-Plus.
The former counter-culture artist Fairey said, in a statement, that he decided to create the new campaign because “I’m not interested in speaking to a small group; I’ve always thought it was the duty of intelligence to make art for the people.”
The average man is very intimidated to purchase a decent pair of proper fitting pants in fear or being considered gay, preppy or being poked fun of by his fellow man. Time and Time have we seen men take care of everything above the waist and then screw the whole outfit up because their pants are a bit to baggy. Word to the wise fellas: if you have a nice bum, ladies love it… is that a good enough reason for you? Some of you on the other hand, may need to visit the gym, do a few squats and get it popping, literally.
At least, not until now. There are unmistakable signs that men are becoming less reluctant to build up their haunches and wear pants cut to flatter, not flatten, them. Trainers have noticed. So have designers, who are cutting pants that are not fashionista-tight or teenager-baggy, but just right. One new clothing company has been bold enough to make a trimly sexy fit the key to its brand identity.
Designers like Neil Barrett and Michael Bastian have for a few years now won customers with carefully tailored, not-too-tight trousers that flatter a guy’s legs, a cut that a couple of years ago might have been called “European.” Check out their article with NY Times Fashion and Style here.

The groundhog was a bit groggy when he came out his hole earlier this year so we’re a little unsure about when Spring will officially break. In the meantime, there’s no harm in preparing yourself for the temperature change now! The shops have already stocked their racks with Pre-Spring collections so now is a better time than never; and when the season hit, you won’t feel pressured to shop-’till-you-drop at the Palisades Mall. Just so there’s no debates as to what to purchase when you do hit the pavement running, here’s a run down of the major trends for Women’s Spring 2009.
Black & White
No longer a representation of an inmate, Black & White stripes are a chic addition to any garment whether it be a hat, a clutch, a skirt, or a shoe. Spice this trend up with a pop of color or keep it Park Ave. with head to toe Black & White.
