Q&A: Mick Boogie

We’re pretty sure you’ve bumped your head to a few of his mixtapes but could never put a face to the name nor music behind “Mick Boogie”. We got a chance to speak to Mick, to find out what keeps him spinning tunes for our eardrums.

Name / Alias: Mick Boogie

What do you currently do for a living?

Dj/entrepreneur. I travel the world djing, co-own a successful clothing store in michigan called Motivation. In addition, I am helping launch a new web startup called Urbpage.com soon as well.

Where are you originally from?

Youngstown, Ohio.  Then Cleveland. And now Brooklyn NY.

What’s in your iPod right now?

Portishead new LP, Wayne’s new LP, and the complete Tribe Called Quest collection.

What track right now gets the crowd jumping?

Depends on where I am playing, but “A Milli” always works. “I Kissed A Girl” always works too for the crossover crowd.

Greatest on-stage moment?

DJing on stage with Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith at the Hancock premier. Their second album was the project that made me become a deejay.

When was your first experience on the turntables?

Highschool, teaching myself the fundamentals of deejaying.

Where do you see music and fashion within the next few years? You’re pretty
tight with the LRG family, I’m sure the line is very thin.

Its gonna continue to converge. Artists doing limited edition tees, like the Qtip/Alife one. Brands doing mixtapes like I do for LRG. Its all relative.

How would you describe your style?

Casual yet urban influenced yet upscale. I like to mix and match. Gucci shades, Kid Robot shirt, Banana Republic Jeans, YSL belt, Nike Dunks.

What inspires you in your daily pursuit of Life?

God and my wife.

Which fashion capital interest you the most?

Paris. Why? We went there on our honeymoon and fell in love with it.

What are your wardrobe trademarks?

I do wear a lot of Dunks. Ask anyone.

What designers do you feel people should begin to look for?

I love some of the new urban lines like Fresco and Dope Couture.

What’s your favorite song?

Of all time, no idea.  Something off of Tribe’s “Midnight Marauders” probably.

What’s your favorite meal?

Grilled chicken and baked potatoes.

Who’s your style icon?

A tie between Jay-Z and George Clooney.

What books are you currently reading?

Luxury Brand Management. Its dope.

What does success mean to you?

Happiness and health for you and yours is all you can ask for, ultimately.

The kid is dope, no question. I remeber first meeting him @ the first “Kings of the Iron Mic” show back in 1999. And of course he blazed it up every second Saturday @ the Touch Supper Club. He definately understands how to move a crowd. I mean this dude is even equipped with a dope side kick ( Terry Urban) He’s the Batman of Hip Hop right now….lol
